DO ESPORTS DDOS ATTACKS THREATEN PROFESSIONAL GAMING?

Esports are on the rise. There's big money involved and counter to what the nay-sayers have always said, a lot of viewers now too. Millions of people watched professionals duke it out in tournaments of League of Legends, StarCraft 2, DotA 2 among others last year and that's great for professional gamers and Esports as a whole. But recently they've hit a snag with DDOS attacks.
In the real world, if there's danger of a pitch invasion from the crowd, security is beefed up. You add more rent-a-cops or police officers to help keep things in check and they rarely happen any more anyway. Not so in the case of digital pitch invasions.
Case in point, a DDOS attack recently hit the G-1 DotA 2 league that actually brought a temporary halt to the league's activity. But it wasn't just a general sweeping attack on the network, but individual players being targeted. This led to some people winning games they might otherwise have not and leaving the organisers in a position of either restarting a portion of them, or awarding the win to a player that seemed ahead at the time.
Fortunately a few days later service was resumed and it all seems to have gone well since then, but the fact that games were affected this much raises a few problems for Esports that the industry will need to figure out a way to address or it will struggle with legitimacy. Here's a few of the biggest problems.
1: It messes with the schedule
Online gaming is a lot more stable and easier to setup than it used to be, but getting everyone together at the right time is important and that's hard to do if people are disconnecting at different times. This not only inconveniences the event holders as they have to factor in delays to the entire schedule, but it messes with the viewers too, as how can they organise their viewing habits if games aren't at a set time?
2: Betting becomes problematic
Betting on sports is as old as the sports themselves, so it's understandable that people want to put a bit of money on their favourite Esports team. However, it's never going to be a big money earner for anyone if people can't plcey bets without fear that the game simply won't take place or a result will be determined by a judge's ruling instead of the actual outcome of a game. If that happens too, you not only risk people not betting again in future, but demanding their money back too.
3: It makes Esports look amateur
We know that DDOS attacks affect a lot of online sites, companies and entities. Hell, even Reddit gets slowed to a crawl by them and that's perhaps the most accessed site in the world right now, after Facebook.
But casual itnernet users – which means most of them – don't know that. If you're a normal sports fan, used to your Saturday game or whatever it is you watch, if you decide to give Esports a go and the first time it gets hit by “hackers,” you'll assume the organisers don't know what they're doing. After all, if every other sporting event had a risk that it might be postponed because of some 'nerds,' you wouldn't watch.
So what can they do?
Unfortunately at the moment, DDOS attacks cause problems for everyone. It doesn't really matter who you are, if those behind a DDOS want to disrupt service they can do it. In the case of the G-1 league, not using Skype (which apparently was behind the exploit that exposed gamers' IP addresses) would be a good start.
The best option though would be to start doing more face to face gaming. It's difficult to imagine every organisation being able to afford flights for everyone but hey, you want to be a pro gamer, stump up some cash or get sponsorship. LAN gaming is also the only way to alleviate that other online gaming problem, lag. That should never be part of a pro-league setup.
In the mean time, perhaps we'll get to a stage where DDOS defences are good enough to stop anyone blocking services of any particular online entity. Until then, other solutions will need to be found.
What do you guys think groups like G-1 could do to help prevent this in future?

IS GTA'S SUCCESS MOSTLY THANKS TO ITS FRANCHISE?

Earlier this year, I asked the question: Is AAA game development a sustainable business model? My conclusion at the time: yes, but a company needs to do more than just pump out a pretty looking game with the latest Cryengine powering its backend to be successful.
There's plenty of evidence of this too, as we've seen a lot of big name games, with giant publishers behind them and even bigger budgets powering production, falling flat in 2013 alone. There was the Tomb Raider reboot, Aliens Colonial Marines, Gears of War: Judgment, God of War Ascension, Hitman Absolution. Not all of these were bad games or even massive failures, but all of them undersold and struggled to break even, which in terms of the tens of millions of dollars that were behind them, is a big problem.
And that's what's so interesting about GTA V, because it's the most expensive game ever made, at over $150 million on production, with the multiple tens of millions that was no doubt spent on advertising it online, on bill boards and on TV. Making that back was going to be a challenge, but of course Rockstar did so in spades.
Mere days after release, it pulled in over a billion dollars and that money is still screaming in. It's made so much money so quickly, that it's become the fastest selling entertainment product ever, beating out movies like Titanic and Avatar, all other games throughout history and there isn't a single music album that can hold a candle to it.
So what's different about this game that didn't propel other AAA games of 2013 to the same lofty heights? Is it perhaps because GTA V is part of a big franchise that Rockstar can leapfrog off every time it makes a new game?
Part of it, for sure. That's why games like Call of Duty and FIFA manage to pump out the same kind of game each year with minor updates and still be some of the best selling games of the year. They offer an experience that's immediately engaging, because people have played this kind of thing before and it comes out regularly enough to tempt them back out.
But that can't be all of it, as many of those games mentioned above as being failures in the eyes of their publishers, come as sequels or prequels or reboots of long standing franchises. Gears of War has been around since the early days of the Xbox 360, God of War since the latter years of the PS2 and Tomb Raider has been kicking around since the mid 90s.
No there has to be more to it than that.
Really, GTA is the perfect storm of marketing, hype, polish and innovation. GTA 3 was a massive hit when it was released, because it introduced many gamers to their first big, open 3D world in a realistic environment. Its expansions in Vice and Liberty city built on this, but IV again showed us what an immersive world could be (even if I'd argue it's perhaps the weakest in the series) and it drew people in once again. V has done the same, offering the biggest open world ever created, giving it a seemingly unending list of things to do.
Rockstar also takes its time, spending years on its games, with thousands of people (GTA V's credits have clocked in at over 39 minutes long) and over $150 million as its budget. While games like anything else can go over budget or drag on too long, Rockstar has shown consistently that it's good at managing big game making resources and beavering away at it until its seamless. Of course there's bugs like anything else, but the level of detail in these games goes to show that Rockstar leaves no stone unturned when it comes to crafting its game world and it makes sure to give itself the time to do it. Some of this is down to its industry clout as such a successful developer, meaning it is unlikely 2K gives it much grief when it comes to release times, but it's still a smart move on Rockstar's part.
And on top of all that, it has the marketing and hype. GTA is a franchise that draws praise from critics and fans and condemnation from people that have never played it. On one hand you have massive advertising budgets making sure it's impossible for you to miss that a new Grand Theft Auto game is out, combined with masterful sneak peaks, leaks and slow burn media releases and on the other hand, you have everyone that hates the violences, misogyny and crime crying foul about it.
When all those factors come together, along with the fact that GTA and Rockstar have a decent fanbase already, it's no wonder GTA V did as well as it did. Rockstar is like the Pixar of the game development world. It stands alone as a developer that can do almost no wrong. Sure it has the odd dud like Max Payne III, but even that sold a few million copies.
GTA V didn't do well just because it was the sequel to GTA IV, it did well in its own right and because Rockstar knows what its doing with such a hot property.

HALF-LIFE 2 - SUICIDE SURVIVAL V1.1 FULL

Suicide Survival is a modification of Half-Life 2 Deathmatch. There are two teams. You either play as an overweight WW2 pilot in the survivor team or as a suicider disguised as a pot plant in the suicider team. The goal for the survivors is to stay alive and to spot the suiciders. They have a couple of throw-able copies of the book: “Gardening for Beginners – by Barbara Bush” as a self-defense weapon. The goal for suiciders is to sneak up close enough to the survivors in order to blow themselves up. Because each map is full of shrubberies its very hard to spot a real suicidal pot plant among the many fake ones. If a shrubbery isn’t moving, you can’t tell if he is being controlled by another player or not. Currently the game doesn’t have any other goal then being simple team deathmatch. However it still is a lot of fun and you should definitely try it out with a few friends.
